Channeling his icon and inspiration Ric Flair, outgoing TACAC President Mickey Saloma lifted his title belt above his head to the roaring approval of over 700 colleagues. The belt, a gift for a year of hard work, camaraderie, and more hard work, was presented to Saloma during the passing of the gavel.

“I’m not going to cry because it’s over,” Saloma said, passing the gavel to new President Micah Lyles. “I’m going to smile because it happened.”

The Motivate Me Committee is currently looking for committee members to help with planning and facilitation of its second annual conference . The Motivate Me: Youth Empowerment Conference is a one-day conference designed to inform, inspire, and empower young men from Texas high schools. In addition to hearing critical messages from community leaders, engaging speakers and presenters, attendees will engage with higher education professionals. Motivate Me 2018 is scheduled for June 9th at the University of Houston – Downtown and committee members are required to attend. We are so grateful for all of those who dedicate themselves to student success as counseling professionals. 2018 National School Counseling WeekTM, "School Counselors: Helping Students Reach for the Stars," will be celebrated from Feb. 5-9, 2018, to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems. National School Counseling Week, sponsored by American School Counselor Association (ASCA), highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. National School Counseling Week is always celebrated the first full week in February.

Confessions of an Out-Of-State Texas Rep

Many of the TACAC members reside in Texas as regional representatives; I do not. I am proud (especially as a native Texan) to have the entire state of Texas as one of my territories, though there are a few quirks that come with not living in or close to your own admissions backyard.

Even though I spent 18 years of my life living in the Dallas area, I’ve been residing in New York City for my entire adult life, and man, Texas has changed since I left. There are new highways and freeways (how did we ever live without the LBJ TEXpress?!), In-N-Out has infected the Lone Star State, and new secondary schools are opening everywhere!
