Blog Greetings from the TACAC President

Dear TACAC Members,

It gives me great pleasure to introduce our new TACAC blog and to be the first to welcome you.  Our goal is to provide our membership small feeds of information that will allow you to click and see full details of a story.  I want to thank Abby Rosensweig and the communications committee for their hard work in getting this started.

When I first started in TACAC, Jennifer Ehlers, my boss at the time, was the President. She invited us to become involved and I jumped on the opportunity.  As I mentioned during the conference, I grew as a professional by the mentors I had and developed the skills I needed in my work. TACAC was the organization that has allowed me to meet colleagues across our work and beyond and I hope it will do the same for you.

This year we hope to continue the excellent work by establishing our Strategy Plan which will be focused on our four pillars which include: Fiduciary, Membership, Infrastructure, and Communications/Branding.  Each of these pillars will guide our work in providing you new programming, a fresh new look, and more importantly a new way to communicate with you.  The Blog will definitely play a role in our communication to our membership.

Program Updates

Camp College at the University of Texas at Arlington was a success as 84 rising seniors throughout Texas attended.  These enthusiastic students gained the knowledge and support needed to prepare to apply for college.

The Admission and College Counseling Institute (ACCI) hosted at the University of Houston was a great way for 104 individuals from secondary, post-secondary, and community based organizations/institutions to attend and learn about the work in college counseling.  Our attendees left with great tools to get them started this upcoming school year.

Our Professional Development Committee is hard at work building a slate of exciting programs this year. More information will come soon on the blog about these opportunities.

College Fairs

College Fair dates are set for the fall and spring.  NACAC will be hosting three Performing and Visual Arts Fairs and one STEM College and Career Fair. The Performing and Visual Arts fairs will be at:

  • Rice University on Tuesday, November 1,

  • Irving Convention Center on Thursday, November 3,

  • Austin ISD Performing Arts Center on Sunday, November 6.

New this year, the STEM College and Career Fair will take place on the University of Houston campus on Sunday, September 25th.

Our Spring College Fair dates are also set and ask everyone to SAVE THE DATE and ask our college partners to budget for this excellent opportunity to meet with rising seniors.  Our National fair schedule is as follows:

  • Houston – April 13th,

  • Dallas – April 17th,

  • Austin – April 19th.

Our TACAC Regional Fairs are scheduled as follows:

  • San Antonio – April 18th,

  • Rio Grande Valley – April 20th.

Conference

The Super Conference Planning has already started.  If you have not yet heard, the 2017 Annual TACAC Conference will be hosted jointly with Rocky Mountain ACAC and Southern ACAC. We expect over 1700 attendees in San Antonio, TX on April 23 – 25, 2017.  Please SAVE THE DATE and plan for this great conference that will provide our members an array of sessions and networking opportunities with colleagues from other states.   I hope you will also consider presenting a session at the conference. The strength of TACAC is in its members and we all benefit when members share their knowledge with colleagues throughout the organization.

We hope to see you at the NACAC Annual Conference on September 22-24 in Columbus, OH.  We will have our TACAC Annual Membership Meeting at the Columbus Convention Center Room C110-C112 from 4:45 – 6:15 PM.

As you can see, our organization is doing many things to support the work of our college counseling professionals.  I hope you will join in helping or attending our programs and increasing the awareness of our association. Together we can achieve the work we set out to do and I hope that each of you will have a great start to the recruitment and counseling year.

With Pride/Con Orgullo,

Ismael Rodriguez, Jr.

President, Texas Association for College Admission Counseling
