Welcome to TACAC!
President's Message: Thanks!
THANK YOU to Hope Young and the conference planning committee who worked throughout the year to make the spring conference a huge success. Through the generosity of conference participants, a sizeable donation was made to San Antonio’s Communities in Schools and we were able to send a contribution to NACAC’s IMAGINE fund. Myra Gonzales gathered talent from across the country to present diverse and well attended sessions – thank you, Myra, for your time this year. The experience and talent involved was incredible. Linda Patlan, once again, handled the endless details of registration in an amazing way. Our new TACAC executive assistant, Diana McAfee, was a constant, though often behind the scenes, support – she was invaluable. We were challenged, inspired, and entertained. More importantly, we had the opportunity to connect to each other, learn from each other, and become better equipped in our professional roles.
Opportunity is all around us and is growing before us as we begin another year of collaborating and connecting with each other to assist students. Angelica Melendez and Jeff Pilchiek have re-launched an opportunity this year in professional development. Partnering with regional service centers, TACAC presented a college admission workshop for high school counselors in San Antonio. Workshops for Fort Worth, Dallas, Houston, and other sites are planned this year. Wow!
Peter Olympia, in partnership with NACAC, has had the opportunity to actively support legislation on the national and state level in support of funding high school counselor education. Pam Rodriquez (see the article in this newsletter) as part of this initiative was able to attend the March NACAC legislative update in Washington DC. Contact Peter if you would like to be a part of this legislative effort.
Many people new to TACAC are taking advantage of the opportunity to attend the Leadership Development Institute in June. I am excited to see the interest and spirit in you who are giving your time to learn more about Texas ACAC and how you can be more involved. Complete the LDI registration, in this newsletter, and also send in a committee volunteer form. Thank you, Ray Brown, for allowing TCU to host this event.
Yours,
Loyce Engle Smith; TACAC President
