Admission and College Counseling Institute

The Admission and College Counseling Institute is held each summer, typically for a week in late July. Designed for high school counselors and new college admission professionals, the Institute consists of both joint and separate higher education and secondary sessions. Joint sessions include student application case studies and a mock college fair. Several evening activities provide opportunities for college admission representatives, high school counselors, and resident faculty to visit informally. The goal for college participants is to prepare new admission counselors for the range of experiences they will encounter as university representatives. All participants should leave with an understanding of the importance of their role in the lives of prospective college students and will receive tools to help them on the job.

ACCI 2009 will be held at the University of Texas at San Antonio July 20 - 24, 2009. Learn more by visiting the College Board's ACCI website.

COMMENTS FROM PAST ATTENDEES

ACCI was some of the best training I have received! I learned so much. All of the presenters were outstanding and every session included information relevant to my current job. I would highly recommend ACCI to anyone who handles college admissions planning in the high school setting. - Cindi Cooley, Counselor, Woodville High School

As a new professional to admission counseling, ACCI provided me with the tools and guidance to start my career successfully.  From the wisdom of the teaching faculty to the networking opportunities, I began the year with tangible resources to help me build relationships with high school counselors, create presentations adaptable to any audience or time frame and connect with colleagues on both sides of the desk.  The experience has been invaluable, and I encourage anyone no matter the experience in the field to take advantage of such a great resource.  I'm grateful and hope to come back as faculty in the future. - Monica Y. Lopez, Freshman Admissions Counselor, University of St. Thomas

Attending the ACCI conference last July allowed me to meet other professionals in the college admissions field.  The presentations were professional, up to date and very informative. The atmosphere was very welcoming and the practical information that I came away with helps my students on a daily basis.  The network that I was able to tap into while at the ACCI will be beneficial for the future. - Kathy Rose, College Catalyst

Making the transition from college admission counselor to high school counselor was overwhelming at times. However, networking at ACCI gave me resources and colleagues I've relied on throughout my first year. I am very thankful for my experience and encourage any new counselor to participate. - Steven Scales, College Counselor, Episcopal High School of Houston

ACCI 2008 surpassed all my expectations.  Not only did I receive wonderful information on best practices in our field and tips on balancing a personal life with distance recruiting, I also experienced an amazing bond with my new colleagues from around the state.  We all share a passion for education and people, and this Institute just fueled that fire and sent us home motivated and ready to change people's lives through education. - Jerrie Dooley, Admissions Advisor, Texas Tech University at Fredericksburg

I was very tentative about attending the ACCI conference last July as an independent college admissions counselor.  But the atmosphere, could not have been more welcoming and enthusiastic.  TACAC and College Board work together to give very professional and up to date information in the college admission process.  Everyone attending was willing to share their experiences and knowledge to help you grow professionally.  From the workshops to the college visits to the mixers -- are something you don't want to miss. - Kathy Rose, College Catalyst
