Channeling his icon and inspiration Ric Flair, outgoing TACAC President Mickey Saloma lifted his title belt above his head to the roaring approval of over 700 colleagues. The belt, a gift for a year of hard work, camaraderie, and more hard work, was presented to Saloma during the passing of the gavel.
“I’m not going to cry because it’s over,” Saloma said, passing the gavel to new President Micah Lyles. “I’m going to smile because it happened.”

Today is the last day to apply for ACCI Faculty, and we are featuring Kimberly Morris from Stephen F. Austin State University! She has been in admissions for 15 years. She is the currently Associate Director of Admissions.
In 2017, Kimberly was invited to present a single session, which prompted her to re-apply as faculty where she fully participated in 2018.

It’s that time of the year again, colleagues: The time of Starbucks, late nights and jam-packed schedules. It’s travel season, and with the first TACRAO week just around the corner, it’s time to prepare to meet new students, new counselors and new friends.
We’ll all be on the go this fall, whether we’re hitting the road or not. But that won’t stop us from making this season memorable. We’ve created a special sign to help you do just that.
Happy National School Counseling Week! We are so grateful for all of those who dedicate themselves to student success as counseling professionals. 2018 National School Counseling WeekTM, "School Counselors: Helping Students Reach for the Stars," will be celebrated from Feb. 5-9, 2018, to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems. National School Counseling Week, sponsored by American School Counselor Association (ASCA), highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. National School Counseling Week is always celebrated the first full week in February.

As Chair of the TACAC Conference Planning Committee, I am very excited to announce that registration for the 2018 TACAC Annual Conference is now open! This year’s TACAC Conference will be held in Galveston, Texas at the Moody Gardens Resort. This conference is shorter in length this year and will only be TWO fun filled days of learning on Sunday, April 22nd and Monday, April 23rd.
Do you have a topic you think should be featured in the blog? Or maybe you’re looking for a way to get involved in TACAC. Maybe you have an interest in social media.
The TACAC Communications Committee is actively looking for new members to write for the blog. Topics range from upcoming events to major trends within higher education. We want to write about topics that are important to all members within TACAC. No previous blog experience is necessary to join.
Many of the TACAC members reside in Texas as regional representatives; I do not. I am proud (especially as a native Texan) to have the entire state of Texas as one of my territories, though there are a few quirks that come with not living in or close to your own admissions backyard.
Map Apps are Bae
Even though I spent 18 years of my life living in the Dallas area, I’ve been residing in New York City for my entire adult life, and man, Texas has changed since I left. There are new highways and freeways (how did we ever live without the LBJ TEXpress?!), In-N-Out has infected the Lone Star State, and new secondary schools are opening everywhere!
In the admissions world, it’s all about who you know—some may be a future boss, a friend, a mentor, or even the future president elect of TACAC. But this week, some of our very own TACAC members are headed to the NACAC Conference in Boston to meet so many of our colleagues across the nation and discuss some important issues facing our field. So, who’s going to NACAC? Let’s find out!
First time attender April Marroqiun, Regional Admissions Counselor for Lamar University says that “I am looking forward to the opportunity to learn new information and resources that will allow me to be a better admissions counselor for my institution, my admissions team, and most importantly: the students that I serve.” Marroquin, who covers Southeast Houston and Central Texas for Lamar, was awarded the Imagine Grant, which has allowed for her to attend the conference this year, but that she will definitely be busy! “Tony Sarda, Assistant Director of Recruitment at Lamar University, and I have planned to cover as much territory as humanly possible during the conference. Considering drastic changes being made in the current White House administration, I am personally hoping to learn more about working with undocumented students. I also hope to bring back a renewed energy and motivation to hit the ground running for another successful year—that, and a LOT of business cards.”
